Chiesa Parrocchiale

di San Giuseppe

XX SECOLO

Parish church of

Saint Joseph

20th CENTURY

The laying of the first stone of the “first” church of the populous hamlet of Valeggio was blessed in 1925 by Monsignor V. Banterle (1890-1964), archpriest of Valeggio.

The bishop of Verona, Monsignor G. Cardinale (1875-1954), in 1927 consecrated the new temple dedicated to Saint Joseph.

In 1945 the rectory was completed by the priest Don Pio Alberti (1877-1945). In 1952, the church became a parish. In 1963, the collapse of the bell tower also damaged the temple.

The then priest, don Leone Pigozzi (1913-1978), fostered the construction of the new temple which was built following the designs of the Veronese architect Gelindo Giacomello (1918-2011).

Monsignor Giuseppe Carraro (1899-1980), bishop of Verona, blessed the first stone of the building in 1965, and its final construction in 1967. In 1990 the church was consecrated by the bishop of Verona Monsignor Giuseppe Amari (1916-2004).

Simple and modern, with a Latin cross plan, this church is characterized by arches and inclined lines.

The exterior is dominated by a peculiar asymmetrical belfry with a clock donated by Valeggio’s city council.

A flight of stairs and a big arch frame the entrance portal.

A portico extends on the righthand side.

The interior, high and bright, is divided by seven magnificent arched trusses which frame the ample raised presbytery, on which the high altar is positioned.

Leaning against the apse vault, on top of a short staircase, people can admire an artistic tabernacle created in 1976 and designed by the architect Giacomello, it is surrounded by two angels kneeling with crossed wings.

Higher above, a large wooden crucifix dominates the scene. In 1994, the church was enriched by a fine organ made by the Maestro Bruno Zardini of Volargne (Verona).

In the opposite transept are positioned the statues of Mary Immaculate and Saint Joseph with the Child, they come from the old church and now flank a crucifix.

The high windows, similar to trifora windows, reproduce the motif of the arches, they also display the names of the benefactors who contributed to the creation of the church and illuminate the serene beauty of this sacred place.

Geistliche Route
